We are only a few days away from the start of the 17th edition of the European Nations Cup, “Euro 2024”, which Germany will host from June 14 to July 14.

The 17th edition will see the participation of 24 teams divided into 6 groups, each group containing four of the best teams in the world.

Germany and Spain are the two teams that have won the most European Nations Cup titles, with 3 titles.

Frenchman Henri Delaunay proposed the idea of the European Championship in 1927 and was given the task of compiling the files and organizing the tournament, which took place for the first time in 1960.

“Masrawy” presents information about the founder of the European Championship:

Henri Delaunay was born in June 1883. He began his life as a footballer at the Étoile des Lacs club in Paris, his hometown. After his retirement he worked as a field umpire, but he also left the profession after suffering an accident in 1883 during one of the matches.

At the age of 20, he was appointed secretary of the club, then after 6 years he became president of the club in 1906, and before that he held the position of general secretary of the Federal Committee at the age of 23.

After assuming the presidency of the Star Club, he was promoted to the position of secretary general of the French International Committee, today known as the French Football Federation.

Between 1924 and 1928, he joined the team of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and also participated in the idea of creating the World Cup with his compatriot Jules Rimet.

Delaunay became the first general secretary of the European Football Association in June 1954, but he did not hold this position for long, as he died on 9 November 1955, and his son, Pepper, held this position after his father.

Delaunay dreamed of organizing a European competition bringing together the best teams in the 1820s, and had already begun to prepare a complete dossier for the tournament in 1927, but he died before seeing this dream come true.

At the European Football Association conference in Stockholm in June 1958, Ebbe Schwarz, first president of UEFA, decided to inscribe Delaunay’s name on the championship cup. Pierre Boschoni, president of the French Football Federation, also announces that he will present this cup himself. in thanks to Delaunay.
