The Spanish national team is facing a problem at Euro 2024, currently taking place in Germany, because of 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, and the matador could be violating the host country’s labor laws, according to The Mail newspaper.
Yamal made his international debut in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia, becoming Spain’s youngest player and youngest goalscorer after scoring the final goal in a 7–1 victory.
The case began after the match between Spain and Italy in the second round, which the Matador team won with a clear goal, and the match saw the exit of Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute of the match, which started at ten o’clock in the evening and nine o’clock German time.
The Mail reported at the time, citing German newspaper Bild, that Spain could violate labor laws if Yamal appears in the Albania match because the law prohibits people under 18 from working after 9 p.m. hours, while allowing… Athletes are allowed to participate until 11 p.m.
The newspaper adds that a special exemption has been granted to athletes, since they are allowed to play until 11 p.m., although this includes time to shower and finish media activities after the match.
If labor law is violated in Germany, the perpetrator will be fined up to 30,000 euros (£25,390).
In Spain’s first match against Croatia the problem of German rules did not arise, as it finished at eight o’clock in the evening German time, but the problem appeared after the match against Italy, which took place at nine o’clock in the evening, and Lamine Yamal was replaced in the 71st minute, at exactly 10:21 p.m.
But in Spain’s final group stage match against Albania, which took place on Monday evening at nine o’clock German time, Lamine Yamal participated in the 72nd minute of the match, at exactly 10:22 a.m., this which means that he violated the law mentioned by the newspaper “Bild”. However, it has not yet been clarified whether the Spanish national team has paid the prescribed fine.
