In this context, the Electronics Research Institute, headed by Dr. Sherine Mohamed Abdel Qader Muharram, signed a cooperation protocol with the Royal Institute of International Affairs “Chatham House”, with the aim of participating in the implementation work of the project “SWITCH to circular economic value chains. » The Ring for Value Chains is an international project funded in partnership between the European Union and the Finnish government. The project is implemented in three countries (Bangladesh, Morocco and Egypt) for the textile value chains, clothing, packaging (plastic), information and communication technologies ( ICT) and electronics. The project aims to accelerate the transformation for the circular economy, through the implementation of industrial pilot projects and capacity building of stakeholders involved in the circular economy.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the lead implementing agency for the project, and implementing partners also include Chatham House, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Circle Economy.

During the agreement signing activities, Dr. Sherine Mohamed Abdel Qader Muharram confirmed that the institute’s policy pays great attention to the issue of circular economy, while the institute has prepared a roadmap titled: “The electronics industry in Egypt and the electronic waste recycling industry. – the circular economy”, funded by the Academy of Scientific and Technological Research in June 2021, where a map was prepared and presented to decision-makers, including important facts and data, as well as detailed studies on the electronics industry and recycling of electronic waste. Egyptian industry and their direct returns on the Egyptian economy. It also included mechanisms and recommendations for the management of these wastes, as well as a general perception of the e-waste recycling industry in Egypt.

The Electronics Research Institute, as one of the institutes affiliated to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, also has significant experience in the field of electronic waste recycling, as the institute has a central laboratory specializing in the field of electronic waste recycling, since 2021, and the “Green Electropekia” incubator in the field of electronic waste recycling With the support of the Center for Environment and Development of the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) in November 2022, which is the first Egyptian government incubator specialized in the field. of electronic waste recycling, the institute and its scientific city also offer accommodation services, technical consultations and logistical support to companies working in the field of electronic waste recycling, such as the company “RCYKL” and the company “ Batterity.”

The Institute participated in the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF2024), held recently in Brussels, where the forum saw a wide participation of international counterparts, policy makers, businessmen, of experts and civil society, to discuss the challenges and solutions to achieve a circular economy and discover successful economic models. The ring has been made in many countries around the world.
